How to alleviate your digestive issues.

Have you been suffering from unexplained digestive issues?

Have you been diagnosed with Irritable bowel syndrome?

Battling bloating, weight gain, painful cramps and congested skin?

This could all be to do with the foods you are putting into your body.

Before going Vegan, I suffered for years with horrendous digestive issues which I found to be extremely depressing. I could never commit to plans as I was never sure just how bloated I’d be by the evening- I would often not be able to fit into my normal clothes by the end of the day, which highly effected my self esteem.

…But then I discovered Plant based living and it changed my life.

Water, smoothies, vegetable juice, fruits, vegetables, grains and nuts are all SO much easier on your digestive system than meat and dairy. Just see the table below for the digestion time of different foods and you’ll realise just how much strain you’re putting on your digestive system by consuming meat and dairy.

Meat is literally the flesh and muscle of a dead animal- not to mention the traces of drugs and hormones it contains. It requires more chewing, an increased amount of stomach acid and an increased secretion of digestive enzymes in order for the body to attempt to digest it.

Not only this, but meat is renowned for being a high-fat ‘food’. This will cause even more problems for your digestive system due to the fact that fat stimulates the digestive tract, either slowing it down or speeding it up- resulting in constipation or diarrhoea, depending on the individual person.

Equally, dairy is incredibly difficult for your body to digest due to the high amounts of sugar and fat it contains. The sugar in dairy, lactose, wreaks havoc on your digestive system, specifically the large intestine. The consumption of dairy can result in bloating, wind, diarrhoea and weight gain due to the fact that it is incredibly difficult for the large intestine to break down the lactose  and high amounts of fat found in dairy products.

Average digestion time in stomach

Water 0 minutes when stomach is empty.
Juices/Smoothies 20-30 minutes
Oranges, Melon, Grapes, Lemon 30 minutes
Apples, Pears, peaches, cherries etc 40 minutes
Salad vegetables (Tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, celery, peppers etc) 30-40 minutes
Cooked vegetables 40-50 minutes
Squashes 60 minutes
Grains & Legumes 90 minutes
Nuts & Seeds 2-3 hours
Animal protein 3-5 hours (depending on type)

As you can see from the table above, a plant based diet is much easier on your digestive system due to the increased amount of fibre and decreased stress on your body.

If you eat a steak (4-5 hours digestion time), followed by a salad (30-40 minutes digestion time) do you know what’s going on in your stomach? I’ll tell you. Your body is working overtime for 4-5 hours to digest this steak, filled with fat, hormones, drug traces, flesh & muscle. This means that the salad, which takes 30-40 minutes to digest and has more nutritional value, begins to ferment in your stomach- causing major digestive issues.

Following a plant based diet with limited nuts and seeds will reinvigorate your digestive system, giving you more energy, better skin and will often result in weight loss.

If you’ve been suffering from digestive issues, congested skin & unexplained weight gain I cannot recommend a plant based diet to you enough. It will change your life.
